Things To Do in Uniontown, PA
The largest city in and the county seat of Fayette County, PA, Uniontown, is located about 46 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. It is considered part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
In its earliest years, the town was sometimes unofficially called Beesontown due to the local Quaker Henry Beeson, who had bought tracts of land to run a sawmill. Eventually, he enacted a lottery to sell off quarter-acre plots near his mill. The National Road, also known as the Cumberland Road, was routed through Uniontown in the early 19th century, and the town grew along with it. Today, that road is US 40.
Uniontown was heavily featured in the Underground Railroad movement in the antebellum years, commemorated by a market on the corner of East Main Street and Baker Alley. Afterward, in the late nineteenth century, the town grew on the backs of coal mines and the heavily growing steel industry.
The area has a number of locations that date way back, including Pennsylvania’s Historic National Road Headquarters. The US highway travels through gorgeous scenery as a whole, this headquarters having a lovely look and view all unto itself. Yesterday’s Today Antique & Craft Mall is a family-owned and operated business with chickens roaming the property and a lovely rustic atmosphere, featuring several artifacts from the last two centuries.
