Things To Do in Washington, PA

The great city of Washington is located in Washington County, PA, and it is also the county seat. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area in the southwestern part of the state, home to Washington & Jefferson College and Pony League baseball.
Washington had settlers and immigrants from Scotland, the northern portion of Ireland, alongside settlers from central and eastern portions of the Colony of Virginia, settling the area around 1768. The Pennsylvania General Assembly established the County of Washington in 1781, the area originally known as “Catfish Camp” that would become the city of Washington, PA, acting as the place for holding the first election. This is the first county in the U.S. to be named in honor of General George Washington.
The area has an interesting history that has resulted in a particular specialty museum. The city was the center of the Whiskey Rebellion of 1791, one of the first open rebellions against the new U.S. government and Constitution centered on a revolt against a whiskey distillation tax. David Bradford House, the original house of one of the rebellion’s leaders, is now a museum devoted to the Whiskey Rebellion and the events leading up to it and after it.
The city is known for the Washington Symphony Orchestra and the Washington Community Theatre, which offer four to five concerts annually. In contrast, the theatre offers multiple productions and musicals year-round.
Finally, the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum has over 50 streetcars from the ages for a nice four-mile round trip if you’re into the history of the sights of trolleys. It is one of the few still-working trolleys in the U.S.
